Some of those injured in the Hunt Oil Road, North Rupununi accident on Monday required specialized services resulting in them being transferred all the way to the city.
This is according to Director of Regional Health Services, Dr. Narine Singh who was asked why the recently-commissioned Lethem Hospital was unable to treat those injured. The accident resulted in the death of three persons and several passengers were seriously injured. The injured were initially rushed to the Lethem Hospital where they were treated and then transferred to Georgetown for further treatment.
Dr. Singh said that some required specialized treatment not available in the border community. There are currently three doctors, all general practitioners, stationed at the Lethem Hospital, which was commissioned on September 14. While noting that he did not have all the facts on the incident, Dr. Singh said that some of those injured sustained head injuries, fractures and broken bones. He explained that these would have required CT scans and surgery, requiring specialized treatment to deal with injuries of that nature. Such specialized treatment was not available at Lethem, he stated.
The Lethem Hospital was a joint venture between the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Government of Guyana. At the commissioning last September 14, Minister within the Health Ministry, Dr Bheri Ramsaran noted that the new facility was state-of-the art and would rival any regional hospital in the country. He had said the hospital would be adequately staffed with personnel who had the skills that were necessary.
On the morning of November 30, minibus BLL 4059 and SUV PKK 3942 collided along the Hunt Oil Road, North Rupununi Savannahs, Region Nine resulting in the death of the three, including a toddler. Fourteen others were hospitalized. Dead were the driver of the mini-bus, Juliano D’Aguiar, 21, of Lethem; passenger Lalis Antone, 52, of Shea, Deep South Rupununi and three-year-old Brandon Grimmond of Lethem.
Six of the 10 persons, who were rushed to Georgetown, were admitted and these included Hussain Mohammed and Adreanna Nicemen, who were admitted to the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital. Nicemen had suffered a broken leg, broken hip and fractured rib. She underwent surgery on Monday night.
Admitted to the Female Surgical Ward were Florence Grimmond, 45, of Lethem, who was the mother of Brandon, Maylene Foo, 25, also of Lethem and S. Mohammed, the other foreigner who was in the SUV. Grimmond was scheduled to undergo surgery having suffered injuries to her pelvic area. In the male surgical ward was Muneshwar Chunniman, 42, of Skeldon, who sustained a leg injury.

What is the use of hospitals in the rural areas when they are of no use? Every single time a person is injured in some far away place, they have to end up dead either on arrival at the Georgetown hospital or on their way there. If it is true that the Minister of health really wants to provide assistance to the taxpayers who pay his salary, then Mr Minister please be advised that it is your job to see that the hospitals are fully equipped with the medical supplies and properly trained staff who are capable of handling the influx of accident victims. Take a look around sir and see just how desperately proper healthcare is needed in Guyana. Ever so often a hospital is opened and it is of no damned use whenever there is an emergency. In the case of an accident, emergency care is needed immediately, not after a long drive to Georgetown. The time has come for some action to be taken; if I can see it, why can’t the folks at the Ministry whose jobs it is to ensure proper medical care is readily available for its citizens? Come on people, take a step into the 21st century, will you please??
you guys need to stop be so hard and one sided..even right here in the us there are/is hospital that do not have all the equipments that is needed to treat certain injuries. and patient are treated and refer to or transfer to other hospitals..i am ashamed when my fellow guyanese who lives in north america. talk so low and condem beautiful guyana.a lot of guyanese here talk crap and nonsense. i am not perfect but we must recognise the facts that there is problems in guyana yes what are we doing to help fix it.. we cause more shame and curse. to other guyanese..we need to rembere we can be kicked out of any country once we were not born there no matters how many years we live d there. but we will never ever get kicked out of our own country…
I have asked myself so many times over, How is this possible? Guyana with so much wealth has ended up one of the poorest,low-leveled and corrupt countries in the world, compared to this very tiny piece of earth where in am living,A country(Holland) that was well shaken up after the 2nd world war.The progerss is unbelievable;regardless of the economical turn-down we are still surviving where we do nt have the opportunity to fish or plant our own vegies. THIS IS A TOTAL SHAME TO THE GoG….WHERE DID THE WEALTH OF GUYANA GO?….an doan tell me burnham did it all…Cheddi did a whole from ‘92 I have seen it with my very own eyes.I was shocked at the rapid developement in that Short space of time, That I could not have waited to return with my dutch born children….This Jagdeo administration has distroyed much more than LFSB.

most overseas guyanese are so one sided because they get free space here and they talk what ever they want to with out any balance or being realistic..yes there is much much more can be done in guyana to make it a better place..but when we got poeple fight against each other for power.insted of sit down and come up with ideas,,soloution.etc.etc.they turn to the streets,,destroys ,,,buildings, cause confusion and division amongst the nation,,a lots has been done and lot more need to be done..the crimes and drugs need urgent attention…jailing people will not solve the problems…we need to educate every one,,,about the danger the country face because of thess problems..do we want guyans to end up like those africian country…where thousands die every day from starvation,,aids,,dieseas,,where there is no shelter and the country stinks,,children are being raped and murdered…no we can all support each others for a better guyana in what ever way we can..so we can walk the world and lift our head and pround to say i am a guyanese….hope i did not offend any one but i am a very realistic person….
realistic person indeed::::Does the joint opposition in Guyana care for it’s people????Hell no!!!!All they care about is grabbing POWER::::::Most everyone knows this including the International Community…Most of those that blog here knows it too…Those that spew it in print knows this too…..

You know what a hospital supposed to do????…..you know how important health care is????……you know how it feel to be in an accident and be rushed to a hospital to receive URGENT medical attention only to hear that facility cannt even deal wid a simple broken bone??????…..Ask de ppl who’s relatives died on their way from one so called hospital to another girly!!!!!…..
They boasted that this place was state of de art and could rival any regional facility (their words not mine)……but yet you dont even have the equipment to deal wid a fracture….that is a clinic not a hospital!!!!!!!!!!!!!..
Aint noby interested in what dey do in de USA….if they way halfa medical facility dat is dem business…..this is Guyana…..just because it happens in the US mean we got to accept it here????……NNNNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!…
How are things going to be better if we sit back and just accept mediocre huh!!!!!!…..
When they do good…we will praise dem and encourage dem to do better……when dem do pup….we gine constructively criticize tell dem do better……GOT IT TRUE GUYANESE???????
Bottom line True Guyanese is that the Indians and the Blacks in Guyana have got to learn to live together. Now the question is in what century will that happen.

It’s just a white elephant to make people think the country is developing. Even Stevie Wonder could see that.
I back you on that, Ray Charles can also see that.
