It was a lovely read Cynthia. Thanks to Mona too, I saw the link for this article in her blog. I feel that food blogs and bloggers are doing an excellent job of keeping age old and family recipes alive and immortal, which is definitely a bit of relief.

Cynthia, I thoroughly enjoyed going through this post. I wholeheartedly agree with whatever you have said.
With the current situation, I fear that in the near future a time will come there wouldnt be any traces left to the old and true ways of how our elders used to prepare food and the only thing left will be confusing fusion foods.

Excellent article Cynthia. I completely agree with you. It annoys me too when experts suddenly discover or conclude whats always been true.

Your articles are heartfelt. I grew up in Guyana and emigrated to the US when I was 18 years old. To this day, on family get togethers, I am always tasked to make cheese rolls and pinetarts. Another sister makes black eyes, she is good at it and does not mind the work.
Additionally, my sons love cheese rolls, they wil not eat pinetarts, however my American friends love pinetarts and not cheeserolls.
I will make your Coconut turnovers, this weekend, and will send a follow-up comment. In Guyana, we call it Red Roll(the color we add to the freshly grated coconut). Also, we split the dough in 2 equal portions, spread the filling and roll it as in a jelly roll. We baste it with a sugar/water syrup when we take it out of the oven.
Thanks again for your recipe.

Thank you so much for this article, this is what I've been saying all along.Going back to memories of the olden days is a gem. Although we claim to be eating healthy foods recipes provided by famous dietitians or chefs, nothing can compare to what our mothers and grand-mothers prepared for us back then, weather its poor man's food or not. One thing I can say for sure is that it used to keep us healthy as a horse.Plus back then the world never knew of all the sickness that we face today. Our young generation is brainwashed by unhealthy, fancy looking foods on advertisements and they forget what real food is.Though some of our Caribbean people are ashamed of our foods, its a shame, because it makes us special in every way. Its our culture that defines who we are and where we came from.Yes, I agree our world is advancing everyday but we should take this lesson from our older folks and put into practice.

Ken, thank you for all that you have said. It is heartening to know that someone "gets" what it is that one is trying to communicate. Again, thank you, very much.

I enjoy reading your weekly articles and recipes, which I find entertaining and knowledgeable. I grew up assisting my Mom to make all types of cakes, pastries and other "old time goodies" that I seldom hear people speak about. Also in the "good old days" we did things with pride, and there was intense competition to see who could make the best of a particular dish, pastry, cake, or any type of "food". I find your recipies to be pretty near perfect. Onto another subject, your recent comments re. Guyana / Barbados / Caribbean relations are quite unbiased, diplomatic, reconciling and very factual, and I find it a very friendly manner to discuss serious issues. I will continue to look foward for more of your articles. Congratulations and thanks.
