Guyanese films in final week of Spectrum

Films by Guyanese diaspora members Dr Michelle Mohabeer and Renata Mohammed open the fifth week of the SASOD Film Festival on Monday.

Renata Mohammed’s Coolie Gyal is a coming out story of the director to her Guyanese parents using a familial montage of photographs and film clips. Renata has won many awards for her work.

Dr Michelle Mohabeer is a Toronto based award winning film/videomaker, film scholar, professor, writer and curator and her film Blu in You is described as an essayist experimental documentary in which writer Nalo Hopkinson’s conversations with another person are used to explore historic representations of the female body.

These films will be screened with the Spanish short Flores en el Parque from director Mariel Marcia.

Painting the Spectrum 5: SASOD’s Film festival concludes on Tuesday with the comedy Noah’s Arc: Jumping the broom.

Admission is free and the films start at 7 pm.
