WOW! Amazing post, Cynthia. Jamun seeds are extremel helpful for sugar metabolism and to regulate insulin levels in diabetics. The fruit is extremely beneficial for diabetics too - the juice of Jamun is considered one of the best isulin regulator remedies( goes without saying that no sugar can be added, the seeds are dried, crushed to a fine flour and cna be added to roti / paratha flour to ensure intake, as they are very bitter!)

Growing up on a farm in Friendship, EBD we had many Jamun trees and I could remember my mother spreading old sheets under the trees during the summer vacation to collect all that she could find to make wine for the Christman holiday. Jamun is indeed a remarkable fruit and after not hearing much talk about this upon my return to Guyana time after time; I simply thought that it no longer grew in the county side as it did when I was a girl. I am glad to know that it still exist in the West Indies and is very beneficial to our health. Let's drink to this re-discovery and I remembered learing that the spelling was Jamoon in English. In Hindi I suspect that it is spelled Jamun; either way it is the same fruit. Such pleasant memories for me!

Cynthia seems like you were perched on my head just reading my mind. All week as matter of fact for most of the month i've been dreaming about Jamun and decided today to visit your website and there it is. Can't tell you how much i wish i could sit down with a plantain leaf, pepper and salt filled with jamun.
Living vicariously through your kitchen.

Can u believe that all day yesterday i was Googling to find some information abt this fruit but found none cuz I spelled it 'JAMOON'? Jamun is in season here!!! When i was in high school we used to make jamun wine and celebrate with it. I love it with salt and pepper in a plastic after abt an hour in the sun. the flesh just melts in ur mouth. I made some wine a few weeks back but it's too sweet so i might dilute it and make drink. I asked one of my students to bring lots for me tomorrow. I want to get the wine right this time. I just love the color and taste of it. I read that jamun seeds are good for diabetes. u just dry them and grind them up and drink it with water.

thanks for a great column this week.

Its strange that many of us do not like certain local fruits, but this probably is from way back when children were warned not to eat certain fruits that were relatively unknown to our fore parents.Today the juice of the Noni fruit is considered to work miracles, and is very expensive.Yet still many of us are a bit hesitant to even touch the fruit, which was traditionally called Dog Dumpling and was said would give you big feet if stepped on. Then there is the Monkey Cucumber, that no one would dare eat,yet I saw then being sold in some other countries as Pickle Gurkins. The next time I am in the QEH carpark I'll have a taste of the Jamun.
