Father of two embezzled over $2.48M from Beepats – court hears

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed a 29-year-old father of two on bail in the sum of $400,000 when he appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly embezzling over $2.48M from Beepats on Regent Street.

Jermaine Assanah of Wortmanville entered a not guilty plea to the embezzlement charge and he is scheduled to make another court appearance at Court Two on February 22.

He denied that between December 1 last year and January 30 this year, being employed as a clerk or servant at Beepats, he fraudulently embezzled over $2.48M that he had received on behalf of the company.

His lawyer Roger Yearwood  applied for reasonable bail for him, stating that he had been employed at Beepats for over nine years and  this is the first time that an allegation of this nature had been laid against his client.

He also stated that his client poses no risk of flight and the matter would be ventilated at the trial where his client’s innocence would be proven.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford made no objections to the bail application but requested that it be set at a substantial sum.

Assanah was later escorted out of the court by a policeman.
