Town Clerk Beulah Williams and  City Treasurer Roderick Edinboro have been dismissed with effect from January 31, 2010, in keeping with the recommendations of a Commission of Inquiry into the affairs of the Georgetown Munici-pality.

The orders for their dismissal were issued by  Minister of Local Government and Regional Development  Kellawan Lall under the provisions of Section 116 (1) of the Municipal and District Councils Act, Chapter 28:01, a press release signed by the minister stated.

It said further that according to the minister’s order in its separate application to each official, “Any benefits to which you are entitled and which happen to be outstanding, shall be paid to you by the Council, minus whatever debts or financial or other obligations owed by you to the City Council/Municipality, in the course of your sojourn in office at City Hall.”

The report by Commissioner Keith Burrowes had stated in relation to the Town Clerk that:

“In all the circumstances, it will be a travesty of moral justice at least, and an unacceptably bad precedent, should not the services of the current Town Clerk be terminated.”

And the same report in recommending the termination of the services of the City Treasurer had stated that: “Evidence of the incompetence of the Treasurer is explicit and overwhelming. It is however a reflection of the indifference and indeed negligence, not only of the incumbent’s immediate supervisor, but also of the Finance Committee and the Council as a whole, that such a substantial degree of malfunctioning could have been perpetuated over an extended period of time.”

The termination of the services of the two City Hall officials has been done “in the public interest,” the release added.
