The Guyana National Committee for Haiti Relief said it shipped 11 additional containers with supplies to Haiti, courtesy of John Fernandes Limited.

The Government Inform-ation Agency (GINA) reported that the shipment contains water, clothes, crackers and other essentials.

The shipment was made possible as vital supplies continue to pour in to the Committee from charity-minded individuals, groups and other organisations. John Fernandes Limited shipped the containers at no cost to the Committee, the release said.

Meanwhile, Committee Member and Director of the Civil Defence Commission, Chabilall Ramsarup said that most of the streets in Haiti have been cleared of debris and as such vital supplies are now reaching citizens. He said the supplies will go directly to the Caricom contingent from Jamaica that is being housed at the Food for the Poor Complex in Haiti. He noted that four containers were sent last week.

John Fernandes Limited Marketing Director Bertie Fernandes said the cargo which costs about US$200 per container, is expected to reach its destination by February 14. He said the seaboard freight will have to stop in Trinidad, where the supplies will be loaded unto another ship which is more compatible with the stage port in Haiti.

According to GINA, on January 26, a vessel with four containers of flour, refined coconut oil, pharmaceuticals, water and clothes departed the John Fernandes Wharf, for Jamaica.

Over $45M worth of items were donated to the Committee and monetary donations deposited into the Committee’s account amount to over $254M.

Several telethons, walk-a-thons and other aid efforts have been staged by concerned Guyanese to assist the impoverished island since the January 12 earthquake.
