Guyanese studying in Canada can apply for scholarships

According to a press release the council formally launched the Guyana Awards National Scholarship Programme in 2008 in order to promote the academic achievements of students of Guyanese heritage pursuing post-secondary education in Canada. The scholarship provides monetary awards for students currently enrolled or those planning to enrol no later than Fall 2010, in full-time undergraduate degree, diploma of certificate programmes at an accredited college, university of vocational-technical institute in Canada.

The council’s aim is to maintain a comprehensive National Scholarship programme that benefits a large number of students while encouraging business partnerships and opportunities for corporate citizens to mentor and offer career counselling to the recipients of scholarships.

The council said seven inaugural scholarships were handed out in 2008 and five last year.

According to the release, recipients are chosen by an independent panel of judges from applications submitted to the council. The recipients will be honoured at the 10th annual Guyana Awards Gala held on May 29.
