Businessman robbed on Agricola road, suspect held

One of two gunmen who robbed a businessman at Agricola Public Road of over $200,000 in valuables was arrested and will be charged shortly.

Police in a press statement last night said the incident occurred at about 2.15 pm yesterday. The businessman, according to them, was at the Agricola, East Bank Demerara location waiting for transportation when he was attacked.

The perpetrators, both armed with guns, took away the businessman’s personal jewellery valued $180,000, a cellular phone and $47,000 cash. They subsequently escaped west of the public road.

Shortly after, police said, the victim observed the two perpetrators cross the Public Road and go into Agricola. A report was made to the police who responded quickly. Ranks of a mobile patrol went into Agricola where they arrested a man.

The man was found in a house and has been positively identified by the victim as one of the armed men who had attacked and robbed him. The accused is in police custody and will be charged shortly.
