Man accused of stealing woman’s jewels

A 32-year-old man was placed on $100,000 bail on Thursday for allegedly stealing two gold rings and one gold and diamond ring from a woman he was reportedly having “an illicit connection” with when he made an appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.

Dominique Greaves of 169 Fourth Street, Alexander Village pleaded not guilty to stealing two gold rings valued $50,000 and one gold and diamond ring valued $300,000 on January 3 at Georgetown, property of Sattie Persaud.

Representing Greaves, attorney-at-law Trenton Lake, in his bid for bail asked that the matter be approached “with caution and suspicion” since the Virtual Complainant and his client “had an illicit connection on the day in question”.

Lake added that two days later his client got a call from the VC who said that she was missing the rings and she thought he was the one who took them. Lake also said that his client was knocked down by the arresting police who were driving a private car.

The police later told his client that he would have to pay for the damage to their car.

Lake assured the court that his client was not a flight risk and had no previous brushes with the law.

Meanwhile, Police Prose-cutor Inspector Stephen Telford said that the defendant was not hit by the police. He said that when the police approached the defendant he jumped onto his motorcycle and the police gave chase. It was while turning a corner that he fell off his bike and the police car crashed into a concrete wall.

Greaves is to return to court on March 16.
