Twenty-five benefiting from sewing class

Twenty-five women are currently being empowered through a three-month sewing class, conducted by a Canadian-based Berbician, Dr. Andra Thakur at the Youth Choice Building in New Amsterdam.

The 14-week sewing class which began on December 16 last is being held in collaboration with Guyanese Women in Development (GuyWid) under the patronage of the Canadian High Commis-sioner to Guyana.

Dr. Thakur who returned home for the sessions is among other Guyanese living in Canada who donated a set of sewing machines and materials to make the class possible. Coordinator of the class and secretary of GuyWid, Indira Yacoob told this newspaper that the class “targets school dropouts, single parents and stay-at-home moms who are willing” to acquire a skill.

She said that, “Most of the students started out not knowing what a sewing machine looked like and now all 25 students can cut and sew school uniforms.”

The women are also having the opportunity to developed social skills, she said. The uniforms would be donated to selected students from schools throughout Region 6.

A graduation ceremony would be held on the 26th of February following which a new batch of women will take over.
