Cops nab armed bandit exiting crime scene

– accomplice escapes

A bandit was arrested by police while his accomplice escaped, shortly after they robbed two occupants of a Tucville home of over $2.8 million in jewellery on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred around 9.10 pm on Tuesday and both men were armed with handguns. Police said in a statement that ranks of a mobile police patrol arrested one of the two men as they emerged from the Jackson Street, Tucville house after robbing the occupants of jewellery, cash and a cell phone.

Investigations revealed that Sheldon Cheddi, 32, of Jackson Street and Duane London, 36, of D’Andrade Street, Kitty, were watching television when the two men entered the house through an open door and held them up, the police said.

The armed men then took away personal jewellery valued at $2.8 million, $10,000, and a cell phone from the two victims.

As they were leaving the building they were intercepted by the ranks of the mobile police patrol, who arrested one of them, while the other managed to escape.

An unlicensed .38 Taurus revolver with six matching rounds along with some of the jewellery and the cell phone which were stolen from the victims were recovered by the police, the statement said.

The two victims were struck about their heads with the firearms by their attackers during the robbery and were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where they were treated and sent away.

The man in police custody will be charged shortly, the police said.
