Twenty-four-year-old Rabindranauth Basil was remanded to prison on Wednesday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend.

Basil, Assistant Manager of Diamond Fire and General Insurance, pleaded not guilty to an unlawful assault charge when Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson read it to him.

He denied that on March 6, he unlawfully assaulted Atri Roopchand.

Roopchand, who was also in court, stated that on the day in question she and Rabindranauth were involved in an argument and he cuffed her in her abdomen and also choked her.

She said that he then took out a knife, placed it to her throat and threatened to kill her. She stated that the incident occurred outside the Windies Bar.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford requested that Rabindranauth be remanded to prison, noting that there has been a number of knife-point murders.

Rabindranauth is expected to make another court appearance on March 15. (AB)
