A police constable was beaten about the body before being robbed at gunpoint on Friday night minutes after he had gone to the rescue of an 18-year-old woman who had been taken to the Ogle Seawall against her will.

Police in a press release last evening said that around 19:40 hours an 18-year-old  security guard was on the Ogle Public Road, East Coast Demerara  awaiting transportation when a man armed with a handgun held her up and took her to the seawall nearby.

He then demanded that she undress and lie on the ground.

A police constable who had stopped on his motor cycle in the area to make a cell phone call observed what had transpired and went to the victim’s assistance.

However, as he confronted the man he was also held at gunpoint and robbed of his cell phone, jewellery and $3,000. He was then beaten about his body with the firearm, after which the perpetrator escaped on a bicycle.

The release stated that the police rank was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital while the female victim was treated and sent away.

Investigations are in progress.
