Vigilance man stabbed after intervening in feud

The 29-year-old man was rushed to GPH sometime around 5.20 pm yesterday with stab wounds to his chest and back. When Stabroek News arrived at the medical institution Ramassar was being given oxygen.

Ramassar of Vigilance, East Coast Demerara was attacked just before 5 pm in the village. His reputed wife, Surujdai Phagoo, told this newspaper that shortly after he left home to go cut grass she received a message about the incident.

“When I reach deh he been lie down…he had two stab in front by he chest and two on he back,” she said.

After she discovered Ramassar bleeding, Phagoo recalled, she immediately arranged to have him rushed to GPH. The man was speedily attended to by doctors at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Room.

“De doctor tell me to wait…they giving he oxygen right now and he going to be admitted to de hospital,” Phagoo reported.

Stabroek News later learnt from the injured man’s father that Ramassar had intervened in an argument between his attacker and a cousin shortly before the incident.

“This thing happen couple house from me,” Ramassar’s father explained, “after this man (the attacker) been arguing with me nephew and he de going and beat he my son end up in between and he tell he (the attacker) to leave meh nephew alone.”

The argument occurred at about 4 pm and Ramassar was attacked by the man less than an hour later as he was returning home with a bicycle load of grass.

“My son was riding,” the older man said, “and then this man run out on the street with a piece of wood from a fence and he lash my son in he back and after my son fall down he start stab he.”

While his son was being rushed to the hospital the elder Ramassar made his way to the Vigilance Police Station to report the matter.

“After I done give de police meh statement de CID [Criminal Investigation Department] rank dem lef’ and dem go by this man house to see if they going to find him,” Ramassar’s father said.

Police up to early last evening, he further said, had not managed to arrest Ramassar’s attacker.

This newspaper also understands that Ramassar’s attacker had spent several years in prison after he was accused of stabbing a man to death several years ago. This is the second time the man had been stabbed. Just over a year ago, his father said, he’d been stabbed at a “wedding house”.
