Gov’t may build new market at Mahaica

Government is considering building a new market at Mahaica in order to accommodate vendors who encumber the government reserves and those who ply their trade along the roadway adjacent to the market.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the project will see collaboration between the Local Government and Regional Development and Public Works ministries. On a recent visit to the community Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Kellawan Lall discussed the plans with stallholders. The ministries are mulling adding an additional storey, moving the market to another location as well as staying at the current site.

GINA said some merchants opined that the market may have been in existence for over 40 years and suggested that the new structure be built at the same location. Overseer of the Mahaica Market, Diadat Haridat said on Sundays vendors are allowed to ply their trade on the street behind the market as well as on the main roadway just in front of the market.
