Relatives are insisting that the heart attack was induced by the beating they believe she suffered at the hands of her husband. Hamawattie Singh said she was informed by a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) rank of her sister’s cause of death. The same policeman, she reported, told her that a file was being put together and would be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

“That is the first thing [name of CID rank] told me in Georgetown outside where they conduct de post-mortem and then when we get to Mahaica Police Station it was a different story,” Singh said.

Rampertab Boladass denied beating his wife when Stabroek News spoke with him on Tuesday. The man, Singh said, will be given Boladass’ body and the funeral is to be held today.

The widower allegedly beat Boladass severely on March 2. This allegation has since been supported by several neighbours, other residents and the dead woman’s relatives. A resident, who requested anonymity, told Stabroek News that it was a neighbour who rushed over to the couple’s Coconut Dam, Cane Grove home that afternoon to “part” the fight.

However, when asked about this episode, Rampertab said his wife fell twice on March 2 and sustained her injuries as a result. According to Rampertab, earlier that day Boladass had complained that her head was “spinning.” She went downstairs to bathe, Rampertab explained, slipp-ed, fell and hit herself on a cylindrical object in the yard. Later the same day Boladass went to bathe, fell a second time and sustained further injuries, he said.

Boladass, according to her widower, was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital after the second fall. She was treated and returned home the same evening.

It wasn’t until the Saturday after that Singh learnt about what had happened to her sister. Singh immediately rushed to the Coconut Dam house where she found Boladass in pain on the floor. Boladass was taken to the Mahaicony Hospital where she was admitted.

Last Friday, after the woman’s condition worsened, she was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). It was upon her arrival at the city institution that Boladass’ fractured hip was discovered. The Sunday before her death Boladass had also communicated to relatives that Rampertab had beaten her.

Stabroek News also viewed several pictures of Boladass’ injuries. Boladass, 49, died at the GPH early Monday morning.

Her head was a swollen, bruised mess; she couldn’t talk because the inside of her mouth was badly damaged, her hip was fractured and there were marks of violence throughout her body.

“I really believe that with this evidence staring us right in de face police woulda been able to do something…but this man still walking free and my sister is gone,” Singh said.
