Magistrate Ann McLennan fined a man a total of $160,000 after he pleaded guilty to four traffic offences when he on Tuesday appeared to answer to the charges at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court.

Alvin Persaud, 34, of Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke Linden Highway and Damon Avenue, Mackenzie, Linden was accused of driving motor lorry GLL 582 while his alcohol level exceeded the permitted limit. He was fined $50,000 for this offence or the alternative of eight months imprisonment.

As regards the charge of breach of insurance, he was fined $50,000 or the alternative of eight months jail; $10,000 for leaving the vehicle in a dangerous position or two weeks jail and $50,000 for being an unlicensed driver or eight weeks jail. The default charges are set to run concurrently.

Persaud allegedly committed the offences on March 15, along the Washer Pond Road at Mackenzie, Linden. After the fines were read Persaud pleaded with the court for additional time to pay as he only had $30,000 on his person at the time. However, since he failed to provide the court with sufficient proof of his addresses his request was denied.
