A 25-year-old man was placed on a bond to keep the peace and ordered to pay court costs of $10,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday accused of assaulting his wife.

According to the facts presented by the prosecution, on March 12 at Paradise Jibb, Essequibo Coast, Munesh Sooklall and his wife Fariah Zaban were involved in a heated argument. Sooklall then decided to leave the home on his bicycle and his wife tried to stop him from leaving.

He consequently dealt her a blow below her right eye, which was still visible in court.

Zaban filed a complaint at the Anna Regina Police Station on Monday and the police arrested Sooklall the same day.

However, in court on Tuesday, both Sooklall and Zaban insisted that what had occurred was an accident and Zaban said she wished to press no charges against Sooklall, since they were living together and usually argued and fought.

Nevertheless, the magistrate fined Sooklall $10,000 and placed him on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
