Fire destroys home at Amelia’s Ward

A fire late last night destroyed at house at Linden. It is believed that it was caused by a lit candle since electricity to the building was disconnected recently.

Yvette Thom, the owner of the home at 1795 Central Amelia’s Ward, was taken to the Linden Hospital following the fire. She worked in Georgetown but visited the home periodically and told neighbours that she was asleep when the fire started at a few minutes to 10 pm.

Neighbours said that at that time, they observed smoke emanating from the building and saw Thom run out. They said they attempted to break down the door to save items but the intense heat forced them back. They said that despite calls to the fire service and even a visit to the fire station, firefighters took a while to arrive.

They expressed the belief that it was the lit candles that caused the fire. A relative of Thom’s usually stayed with neighbours to look after the house but he was not home at the time. Thom did not appear to have sustained any physical injuries.

Only a chest of drawers with some clothes and documents and Thom’s bed were saved.

Investigations are ongoing.
