Mother of children in Sharma alleged sex abuse in custody

The mother of the child at the centre of sexual allegations made against television broadcaster Chandra Narine Sharma has been handed over to the police after visiting the Ministry of Human Service & Social Security on Tuesday.

Stabroek News has been reliably informed that the woman turned up at the ministry on Tuesday and after speaking to officials she was handed over to the police in whose custody she was up to last evening.

The police had said the woman, Primotie Danraj, the mother of the girls who made sexual molestation allegations against Sharma, was wanted. The authorities had given the woman’s last known address as 43 Robb Street, Lacytown, Georgetown, which is Sharma’s residence. The family had resided in an open space at Sharma’s residence, but since the allegations surfaced the woman and her two younger children no longer live there.

Sharma has been charged with carnal knowledge of a seven-year-old girl who is now 13 and was yesterday granted $2 million bail. (See other story on page 10) It was this child who last week through an affidavit had detailed alleged sexual molestation acts committed by the ‘Voice of the People’ television host. She had also claimed that similar acts were committed with her two older sisters, when they were children, and her two younger sisters. While her two sisters had initially denied her claims they later admitted to the allegations. The two younger sisters were later taken into custody and medical examinations done confirmed that they were both molested. All five sisters and a 12-year-old cousin who also made similar allegations, are now in the custody of the Child Care Unit of the ministry.

The mother in an affidavit had described her daughter’s claims as “wicked lies” and sources yesterday said the woman maintained that her children were not molested by Sharma.
