The Ministry of Public Works in collaboration with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission have completed several traffic safety projects along the Linden to Lethem road, involving the installation of signs at critical areas.
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the initiative is part of the efforts to make the Linden to Lethem road more user-friendly. Towards this end, the government has been implementing safety measures to ensure safe traffic along the corridor. Road and Safety Engineer in the Ministry, Nigel Erskine, was quoted as saying that in late 2009, the first phase of the project was completed with signs reflecting 32 “dangerous curve,” 32 “narrow bridge” and several “do not pass” bilingual (English and Portuguese) signs from Annai to Lethem.
Earlier this year the second phase of the signage project was expedited and 172 signs which included destination, speed limit, keep left and winding road signs were installed from Wisroc to Lethem. Erskine noted that approval is being sought to continue signage on the roadway, with emphasis being placed on installing turn signs from Kurupukari to Lethem.
GINA said owing to the expanding mining sector and other investment opportunities in the hinterland areas including trade with Brazil, many persons have been traversing the 456 kilometres Linden to Lethem Road.
