Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best has been conferred with
Brazil’s highest military honour, the Order of Military Merit, by President Luiz Ignacio Lula Da Silva.
In a press release the army said Brazil Ambassador to Guyana Luiz Gilberto Seixas de Andrade decorated Best with the Order at a ceremony marking Brazil’s Army Day on Friday at the Pegasus Hotel.
In brief remarks the Ambassador said Best was being honoured for “…being the driving force behind more productive cooperation between Guyana and Brazil in the field of Defence,” pointing out that the two countries share good relations.
The Order was established by decree on July 11, 1934 and is intended to honour “…the militaries of the Army, Navy and Air Force, members of the Auxiliary Forces, Civilian and Foreigners, who have rendered relevant services to the Brazilian Army and who have deserved the homage of the Force,” the release said. Best is the first Guyanese to have received this merit, the GDF said.
The Ambassador congratulated the Chief of Staff on behalf of the president and people of Brazil. He also extended best wishes for higher achievements in his career.
