Corentyne man charged with attempted murder of guard

A Corentyne man was yesterday charged with the attempted murder of a security guard who is currently hospitalized.

Vallen Smart, 25, of Ulverston, Corentyne was charged with the attempted murder of Kishore Sewdat of Whim Village when he appeared before Magistrate Krishndat Persaud at the Whim Magistrate’s Court. An arrest warrant was issued for two other persons in relation to last Sunday morning‘s incident in which Sewdat was attacked by a group of men at his worksite. Smart is expected to make another court appearance on May 31st.

Sewdat’s motionless body was discovered by his employers around 3 am on Sunday, the intruders made off with several items including a sewing machine, a chainsaw and several bags of paddy following the attack. Sewdat’s face was badly bruised and his injuries, which included a gaping wound to the chin, were described as serious and he was immediately admitted to the New Amsterdam hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

His son-in-law told Stabroek News yesterday that Sewdat’s condition took a turn for the worse on Monday and he has since been hooked up to a life support machine in the Intensive Care Unit of the medical institution.

He said the man’s employers related that he was found with his hands bound behind his back, and based on the injury to the chin, he said the intruders were trying to strangle the man, since a blood-stained rope was found next to his body.

He said Kishore’s jaw was broken during the attack, and according to him, doctors at the public hospital gave the critically injured man a slim chance of survival.
