Grand reunion planned for President’s College silver anniversary

President’s College is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and the old student’s association is organising a string of activities to commemorate the event, in addition to raising much needed funds for the school.

The President’s College Alumni (PC Alumni) body will host a reunion weekend scheduled for August 6-8, 2010; hundreds of alumni including students from the first batch in 1985 are expected to attend.

PC Alumni said in a press release that the focus of reunion weekend is a massive give-back exercise at the college at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara. Old students will participate in repainting the college, classroom restorations, tree planting exercises and the installation of a volleyball court among other activities. PC Alumni will also make several donations to the college, and a few corporate sponsors and students have also committed to contributing to the college.

“Reunion Weekend 2010 aspires to be a catalyst for the revival of President’s College as the School of Excellence. After 25 years since its inauguration, many of the school’s graduates are already accomplished professionals in their respective fields,” the release stated.  According to the body, there is an urgent need to preserve the culture and value system of competitive learning, discipline, excellence, tolerance, sharing, cooperation and sacrifice in the absence of race and class that has defined their unique experience at President’s College.

PC Alumni said it has already met the Minister of Education, the Chairman of the school board, the Principal and other officials to discuss the reunion and the plans to assist the college.

The body is also hoping to launch a volunteering and mentoring programme at the college, establish a future endowment fund, and focus on specific projects and to fund various scholarships to students.

For the weekend, the body said old students will participate in an impromptu cultural show and lime on the evening of August 6 at the college and enjoy the benefits of “Dance with Guitars” the following evening at the formal ball held in Georgetown.  On Sunday, August 8 students will gather at the college grounds for a day of sports among other things.

The reunion is being organised by the New York based alumni body, President’s College Alumni Incorporated (PCAI) in conjunction with President’s College Old Student’s Association ( PCOSA). Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as a significant number of alumni have already confirmed attendance and space is limited for the Saturday ball, the release said.
