In a press release, the PPP said that Rodney had exposed the nature of the regime and ridiculed the PNC dictatorship and its maximum leader.

Rodney blunted the PNC dictatorship racist weapon and showed how harmful the dictatorship was for the whole country and all its people, the release said.

It added that Rodney was a prominent player in the social advances in education, health, housing and water. “In saluting this national hero we rededicate ourselves to the ideals we shared during those difficult but heroic times,” the PPP said.

Stating that there had been a close and fraternal relationship between Cheddi Jagan, the PPP and Rodney, the party said it was proud “that of the many things we struggled for together have been achieved”. It added too that democracy, freedom of expression and respect of human rights which were highly regarded by Rodney are today flourishing in Guyana.

Rodney was 38 years old when he was assassinated after returning from Tanzania in 1974 and joining the anti-dictatorial struggle. A historian, Rodney’s impact on African and Caribbean studies is highly recognised
