Domestic charged with stealing employer’s phone, cash

A domestic who allegedly stole a Blackberry cell phone with charger and $3,000 from her employer was placed on $70,000 bail by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson last week.

Shevone Rodney, 19, of 55 East Ruimveldt  denied the charge which alleges that on June 6 she stole one Blackberry cell phone valued $100,000, a charger valued $2,000 and $3,000, being the property of Mark Anthony Barrow.

Rodney, in her defence said that she did not steal the phone.  She said on the day in question Barrow called her to tell her the phone was missing. However she contended that the last time she saw the phone, it was in the possession of Barrow’s sons.

However Barrow said that on the day, his sons were not at home and that Rodney is known for picking up articles around the house.  In fact, he said, she has had other problems with persons she had worked with.

The prosecutor did not object to bail.  She was then granted bail and the matter put down for July 20 in Court 2.

However about an hour later, attorney Mohamed Zafar appeared in court and told the magistrate that he is Rodney’s attorney but was unable to be in court because he was before the Chief Justice in the High Court. He implored the magistrate to consider a reduction in bail, since he said that his client could not afford the amount.

However the magistrate said that the matter had already been dealt with and the attorney would have to address the issue of bail when the matter comes up next.
