The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has received another fleet of vehicles to help it fulfil its mandate.

At a simple ceremony, Minister of Home Affairs  Clement Rohee handed over the keys to six Toyota Hilux 4×4 double cab pickups, three Canters, and a car (to facilitate the learner/driver programme) to the GPF. “Government has taken the necessary steps to ensure prompt and efficient responses to reports and calls for help by the public,” he said.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, Rohee noted that the country is still plagued by serious crimes and as such the ministry will seeks ways to ensure that the police can respond promptly to emergencies.

“Response time tends to be a major challenge. This is one of the areas where there are constant criticisms whether justly or unjustly; it is an issue that we must strive constantly to overcome,” he said.

Rohee then called on Commissioner of Police Henry Greene to make an inventory of the vehicles that are assigned to police divisions and sub-divisions across the country so that the ministry can make a proper assessment in terms of the GPF’s vehicular needs.  “I would like this to be done as speedily as possible so that we could act expeditiously on this matter,” he said.

The minister then appealed to the ranks who will be entrusted with the vehicles to use them as required by the force in the service of protection of the nation.

Meanwhile, Greene noted that since 2005, the GPF has been regularly provided with quality vehicles that are suitable for the roads, as well as the backlands. He also said he would work expeditiously to complete the inventory.
