The Ministry of Education on Friday launched its 2010 work study programme that will place 350 students at 42 agencies within the private and public sectors for eight weeks of ‘on-the-job’ training.
Assistant Chief Education Officer Secondary Melcita Bovell urged the pupils to use the opportunity to build their reputations within the work environment. According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release, prior to the opening of the programme, schools were engaged in workshops where the students were taught how to conduct themselves in the work environment.
Bovell also encouraged them to be aware of work ethics and reminded them that they must be outfitted in their school uniforms while participating in the programme. She also said students who are not punctual would be pulled from the stint and replaced.
Additionally, Senior Personnel Officer Daneilla McCalmon told the students that the agencies they are assigned to expect them to be punctual, properly attired, to show professionalism and to be accountable.
GINA said the participating schools are Queen’s College, St Rose’s High, North Georgetown, Tutorial High, and Campbellville, Charlestown, Queenstown, Cummings Lodge and Richard Ishmael secondary schools. The programme was launched at the Queen’s College auditorium.
