Former Land Court Judge Gerald Broomes passes away

Former Land Court Judge Gerald Broomes passed away Monday night at the Medical Arts Hospital following a brief illness.

Gerald Broomes

The 76-year-old lawyer, who had the distinction of being one of two trained surveyors who became lawyers,  was a consultant with the Lands and  Surveys Commission at the time of his death. The other trained surveyor who became a lawyer was former President Arthur Chung.

Stabroek News was told that the Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara resident became a land surveyor in 1976 and worked in The Bahamas for several years before returning to Guyana in the 1970s when he studied to become a lawyer. He later moved to the US where he worked in procurement law and then retired to his homeland.

Sometime in 1995 he was appointed a Land Court judge, a position he held until 2002.

“He loved law and he loved being a surveyor,” a relative told Stabroek News, adding that at one time he lectured at the Government Technical Institute (GTI).

The former judge had also worked out of the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions where he was described as the police legal advisor.

Broomes was married to Nola Broomes and fathered four children, Paul, Garvin, Karen and the late Colin.
