New children’s book seen as symbol of China-CARICOM ties

“The Emperor, His Bride and the Dragon Robe,” a children’s book written by Lisa Sankar-Zhu, was launched at the Expo Shanghai 2010, and is seen as being symbolic of the cultural ties between China and CARICOM member states.

According to a release from the CARICOM Secretariat, the book was written by the Trinidad and Tobago-born author who lives in China.  She said that the book was of international appeal and though it was “just a fairy tale,” she hoped that it would spark curiosity and a passion for Chinese culture.

In remarks, Edwin Carrington, Secretary General of CARICOM said that over the years the Government of China has expanded its cultural exchanges and cooperation programmes with CARICOM states and now CARICOM is able to reciprocate through a publication which will bring the nations together.

The book which is set in ancient China, was meant to reflect old customs however it brings out morals and values which are apart of every society.

The book was described as “wonderful” by Xu Bo, Assistant Commissioner-General of the Expo, who urged the gathering to use the event to help people understand each other in order to promote peace.
