Courts hosts Emancipation dress competition

In an atmosphere filled with high energy and fuelled by the beat of the African drums, Courts Guyana Inc held its annual Emancipation dress competition for its staff at the store’s Main Street location yesterday.

Courts Guyana spokesperson Zeya Nasir-Ramnauth said the competition encourages its staff to be knowledgeable and appreciative of African history in Guyana. Each staff member was given an opportunity to be a part of the competition and three males and three females were picked as winners and awarded monetary prizes.

Meanwhile Eric Phillips, Executive member of the African Cultural and Development Association (ACDA) said that the furniture store has been a trendsetter in this activity every year and by holding the event it offers an opportunity to embrace our culture and helps one to appreciate other cultures in Guyana.

Ten staff members displayed their wear before members of ACDA, who judged the displays on the originality, completion and display of the attire.

In the male category, Randy Nurse won the first place.  He danced to the beats of the drummers in displaying his outfit, entertaining the crowd in the process. Second place went to Anthony Staymon while Wilfred Cameron was awarded third place.

Meanwhile, in the female category, first place was won by Michelle Griffith while Cardella Allen copped second place and Oweda Lawrence placed third.

In making the closing remarks, Country Manager of Courts, Clyde de Haas thanked the participants for their involvement in the competition and said that they had set the stage for Emancipation celebrations. Of the competition, he added, “we are stimulating culture to strengthen acceptance as well as spread harmony in the country.”
