Govt gives GDF $1M for camp fire celebration

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds told Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officers at the close of exercise Home Guard that government is contributing $1M to its camp fire celebration.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release Hinds made this declaration in his address on Thursday at Tacama, Berbice River after GDF personnel had demonstrated their military capabilities in paratrooping and artillery.

The Prime Minister said he was delighted at the display and he encouraged young GDF officers and ranks to challenge themselves to contribute to enhancing the force. He also told the ranks that it is necessary that they specialise in various areas in the GDF in order to make significant contributions to the nation. Hinds also told the officers that the president was pleased with the reports he had been receiving about exercise Home Guard.

In his address Lieutenant Colonel Kemraj Persaud, Commanding Officer of Training Corps, said the exercise was done to ensure that officers are proficient in the use of arms. Various weapons including small arms were exhibited and demonstrations were carried out. Several paratrooping exercises were also done and Persaud noted that this activity helps to insert troops into battle and or behind enemy lines. He noted that the GDF’s paratrooping capabilities have been boosted throughout the years from international and local training.

GINA said Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best, Permanent Secretary at the Office of the President Dr Nanda Gopaul and members of the Defence Board also attended the exhibition.
