The Sophia Artists Group yesterday launched a week long exhibition, titled “the pride of our community,” that will showcase the talent of young artists in the area.
According to Louis Jordan, Vice president of the group, the exhibition will be held until August 21 at the Pattensen Community Centre.
Apart from the art exhibits, there will also be cultural segment of the programme that will include performances in song, dance and drama. The Group was started in July 2009 with a mission to promote the arts in all forms, including literacy, visual and performing. This is the second exhibition, which has been hosted by the artists.
Jordan said the involvement of the community youths in art is a positive step since it would keep them off the streets and give them a sense of purpose. Further, he added that the skills they learnt can be built upon and make them professionals in the future.
Ten youths, boys and girls between the ages of eight and 16, who have shown enthusiasm in sculpting, are taught the craft three days a week at the community centre.
This evening at 6:30pm a gospel concert will be held at the centre while tomorrow there will be a capoeira exhibition. A grand presentation on Indian culture, including songs, dance and drama will be held on August 20.
The exhibition runs from 16:30 to 20:00hrs daily. There is an entrance fee of $100 and all proceeds will go towards buying new equipment for the art class.
