Registration starts at new $15.8M Sophia nursery

Principal Education Officer Marcel Hutson is calling on parents in Sophia to ensure that their children attend school as registration has started at the newly built $15.8M nursery school at ‘C’ Field.

Hutson, in his address to parents at the school on Tuesday underscored that education is “the vehicle out of poverty” and pointed out that considerable attention is being placed on expanding access and opportunities at all levels. According to a press release, the Sophia Nursery School, the second to be built in the community, will be opened in September and ministry plans to make it a model facility.

Hutson urged teachers and parents to care the building and work collectively to realise its purpose. He said the school is open to new admissions and though registration ended on Friday, the process will resume for special cases in September. School uniform vouchers were also distributed on Tuesday.

The release said the new school boasts modern facilities including teachers and students’ washrooms, recreational equipment, a staff room and a sick bay. It can accommodate more than 100 pupils.

Hutson also pointed out that the access road to the school has been earmarked for repair. The recreational facilities in the school’s compound will also be upgraded.

Earlier this year education minister Shaik Baksh had noted that while his ministry has been able to achieve universal primary and secondary education there is only about 80% coverage at the nursery level. He emphasised that strides are being made to boost attendance at the latter and he was confident that this can be achieved within two to three years.
