Cornelia Ida woman stabbed seven times

Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) were last evening preparing a 22-year-old mother of two for emergency surgery after she was brutally stabbed about the body allegedly by her common-law husband.

Trishwari Ramdhary of Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara, was stabbed at least seven times about the body by the father of her two children as the two  argued around 11:30 yesterday. Her condition was listed as critical and police on the East Coast were last evening looking for the man who reportedly fled the scene on a bicycle.

According to reports, the woman’s husband went to a location at Enterprise on the East Coast of Demerara yesterday morning where Ramdhary was staying with someone with whom she started a relationship recently.

The couple separated some two years ago.

Gangaram Ramlall, whose son the injured woman met recently, told Stabroek News that the suspect, his mother and a sibling arrived at his home around 11 am yesterday and asked to speak to Ramdhary.

He said the woman went out to the yard to speak to the man and the two began arguing over who should keep their children, a 6-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. He said he was sitting in his house when, a few minutes later he heard the young woman screaming for help

Ramlall said when he ventured out to see what was causing the commotion, he saw the suspect plunging a “long knife” into the woman’s body and he noted that during this time, the man’s mother and sister, “escape with the daughter”.

He said that the man, after stabbing the young mother, picked up a bicycle and rode out of the village as residents gathered and pursued him but the man escaped in the nearby cane fields.

Ramlall said the young lady was picked up in an unconscious state and was rushed to the GPH with blood streaming down her body while another relative reported the matter to the Vigilance Police Station.

Ramdhary sustained stab wounds to her chest, sides and shoulder, the man noted and according to hospital sources, while the woman regained consciousness yesterday afternoon, her condition was serious.

Ramdhary’s mother told Stabroek News at the GPH that her daughter was being prepared for surgery at press time.

She said that the doctors noted that the young woman was wounded close to her lungs.

She also lost a lot of blood following the attack.

The worried woman said that her daughter and her common-law husband shared a stormy relationship up to the time they separated and another relative related that the man would constantly beat the woman but she could not say if reports were ever lodged with the police.

Meanwhile, the suspect’s mother and sister went to the Vigilance Police station and reported that they were attacked by the woman and her new partner and after being questioned extensively by ranks at the police station they were released.

The suspect meantime remains on the run.
