Fire said to be caused by a candle on Wednesday destroyed a two storey wooden house situated at 71 East Canefield, East Canje.

The house was owned by Michelle Barry who resides overseas and was occupied by her sister Veronica Richardson called ‘Verone’ a vendor and her husband Trenton Mingo.

The remains of the house

The upper flat was occupied by her brother Linden Barry and his wife Malica Barry.

According to Veronica she was at home around 11 pm when she smelt something burning. She came out side and checked but saw nothing and she went back inside. A little while after, she heard her sister-in-law shouting to her that the entire upstairs was on fire. She immediately rushed outside and raised an alarm.

Neighbours came out and formed a bucket brigade, but to no avail. The fire service was also summoned but by the time they arrived the entire house was already engulfed in flames. At the time of the fire her brother and husband were not at home.

The police and the Fire Service are investigating.
