Carpenters fracture legs after fall from De Hoop shed

Two carpenters fractured their legs mid-morning yesterday after a section of a shed on which they were working collapsed at De Hoop, Mahaica.

Amin Amad and Heera, called Robin, both of Mahaicony were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital around noon. The men were immediately sent for x-rays and their injured legs strapped.

Amad, co-workers told Stabroek News at the hospital yesterday afternoon, fractured his left leg while Heera sustained injuries to the right leg. They were dismantling a section of a shed, approximately 15 feet high, Amad told this newspaper, when they suddenly lost footing.

“After I fall down like I mek Robin lose he balance and he fall too,” Amad said yesterday.

The man was at the time sitting in a wheelchair near the Emergency Room. His leg was already heavily strapped, he was in much discomfort and explained that they were waiting on Heera’s leg to be bandaged.

Amad when questioned about whether he planned to make compensation claims from his employer declined to comment further. He added that yesterday was his first day on the job.

Meanwhile, the contractor with whom the men were working explained that they were repairing a shed at the Mahaica location.

Their employer, he said, is a resident in the area and has promised to compensate the injured men.
