Man remanded over trafficking ganja at Bartica

A 20-year-old man accused of having a quantity of cannabis in his possession was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before new acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court

The allegation is that on September 6 at Bartica, Philmon Lorry had in his possession 182 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

Attorney-at-law Vic Puran who represented the defendant requested that the bag in which the cannabis is alleged to have been found undergo a fingerprint test as he vigorously denied the charge levelled against his client. Puran added also that his client will subject himself to the fingerprint test, noting that the bag did not belong to Lorry.

The attorney then made an application for his client to be admitted to reasonable bail on the grounds that he has no antecedents, has a fixed address, poses no risk of flight and has been cooperating with the police in their investigations.

Prosecutor Stephen Telford in his address to the court said that on the day in question, the police, acting on “certain information” searched the defendant and uncovered the cannabis in a bag belonging to him.

Puran was unable to secure bail for his client who was later remanded to prison. His matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court for September 28.
