Woman stabs man in chest during drinking row -court hears

A woman who wounded a man in the North West District (NWD) was on Thursday remanded to prison by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Shawn Marcelino, of the NWD, admitted that on September 5, at the NWD, she unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on the person of Edward Atkinson. Atkinson was not present at court and when Marcelino was given a chance to respond to the charges, she declined.

According to Prosecutor Stephen Telford, Marcelino and Atkinson were drinking and some time after, he cautioned the woman about her conduct. She became annoyed and an altercation ensued between the two and Atkinson was injured as a result.

He was taken to the Mabaruma Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) for further medical treatment.
According to Telford, Atkinson, who was stabbed in his chest, was discharged from the medical institution on Thursday. Telford asked that Marcelino be remanded to prison until the complainant’s condition can be determined.

The unrepresented Marcelino was later remanded to prison. She was ordered to return to court on September 17.
