A mother of four was brutally stabbed to death in her bathroom last night by her former lover, days after she moved out and told him she was leaving him.

Deon Stephens

Deon Stephens, 31, of Vigilance, East Coast Demerara was attacked in the bathroom at her mother’s house some time after ten last night. Her attacker Leon Robinson called ‘Muff’ escaped after stabbing Stephens to her heart and throat and slashing her across the chest.

She was rushed to the hospital but died before she got there.

Stephens’ 14-year-old son, her youngest child, witnessed the attack, but was too overcome with grief to speak.

Stephens’ sister told this newspaper that their mother Desiree Stephens went to her daughter’s aid and she too was attacked by Robinson. She received a chop to her hand, the relatives said.

Stephens, according to one of her sisters, had only moved in with their mother at Vigilance on Sunday after leaving her Strathspey home where she had lived with Robinson for some seven years.

The sisters said the relationship was an abusive one and Stephens, who worked as a security guard, made up her mind to leave Robinson after they had a dispute on Sunday. According to her sisters, she was threatened.

“Last night [Sunday] he hollering that when he done do wha he gah do she, he going Trinidad. He threaten fuh bun up and do she this and that,” the eldest sister said as she mourned the death of her sister.

On Sunday Stephens and her mother had visited the Vigilance Police Station to make a report. But the dead woman’s sister said that the matter was treated lightly by the police who did not stay around to ensure that the woman collected all her belongings when she went to pick them up at the Strathspey home.

Robinson’s attack was believed to be premeditated. The yard where Stephens’ mother lives is not fenced and the bathroom is located outside behind the house. She was attacked just as she exited the bathroom.

Stephens has left to mourn her mother and three siblings; her son and three daughters, who were not at the home when the incident occurred; and other relatives.

Stephens and Robinson did not have any children together, her sisters said.
