Muslims hold International Eid Fest 2010 at Anna Catherina

The Muslim Youth League of Guyana, the Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman and the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex hosted their 7th Annual International Eid Fest at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex on Sunday last.

Headlining the event was one of Trinidad and Tobago’s Best Qaseeda singers, Jameel Hoosein, in addition to  Florida-based Guyanese Imam Husman Bacchus,  a press release from Public Relations Officer Raymond Azeeze said.

Among the hundreds of persons in attendance were Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar, Alliance for Change Leader Raphael Trotman, and officials from the US Embassy in George-town as well as Muslim leaders from across Guyana and the Caribbean.

The event which was first observed in 2003 brings the leaders of all Muslim organizations as well as the jamaats from across Guyana and members of the wider civil society together in the celebration of one of Islam’s greatest festivals.

Hoosein’s electrifying performance had the audience singing along with him and requesting more, while he was ably supported by Guyana’s own legend, Mohan Nandu, the release said.

During the programme, Bacchus in his short presentation, urged Muslims not to forget the lessons from the just-concluded month of Ramadan. Imam  Bacchus is currently the Religious Director of the Islamic Center of Clermont, Florida, USA.  He was born on the West Coast Demerara and had served as the Secretary of the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex  (then the Anna Catherina Jamaat) from 1968-1975 when he migrated to London, England in pursuit of higher education, before residing subsequently in New York, USA.

Prime Minister Hinds, representing the Guyana government, congratulated  the Muslim community on having successfully completed a month of great sacrifice and blessings.

Ramotar and Trotman both made brief remarks during the programme which also saw the recitation of the Quran, the release added.
