Hinds leads activities at Amerindian heritage fun day

Prime Minister Samuel Hinds gave the charge at the Annual Day of Sports and family fun day at the Carifesta Sports Ground hosted on Saturday last as part of Amerindian Heritage month activities.

Hinds, who is performing the duties of President, took the athletes’ salute and declared the event open, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. Male and female football, volleyball and cricket teams from region one, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten participated in the games.

In his address, Hinds said the geographical separation of the people in the hinterland makes attending these events important since they provide the opportunity for them to interact with persons from the coast. He encouraged the athletes to develop themselves to be the best they can be in all areas and assured them that the administration recognises the contribution of the Amerindians to the development of sports in Guyana.

Additionally, Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony spoke of the improvement in sports in the country, adding that more teams comprising athletes from various parts of the country are now representing Guyana internationally. He said the ministry will strengthen its partnership with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to promote development in sports in hinterland communities and it will provide hinterland teams with basic sporting equipment. Anthony added that the ministry aims to develop kayaking in other regions in the hope of improving and increasing sports in the regions.
