Doris Morrison chalks up 104

Doris Morrison celebrated her 104th birthday at her Plaisance home on Friday, surrounded by family, friends and school children who had gathered to mark the occasion.

There was a hive of activity at the home as children from the community’s schools gathered to sing happy birthday to her. Morrison, whose health has deteriorated over the years, sat passively by, at one point, she nodded her head as she was bestowed best wishes by a relative.

Morrison, who was born in 1906, has one surviving daughter who arrived in the country especially for the celebrations.  She also has nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

“She’s nice… she is my friend, mother, grandmother all in one,” said Maxine Straker of her grandmother whom she takes care of daily. She fondly remembered times when Morrison responded to shows of affection from her. Since this hardly happens, she treasures them immensely.

It was expected that 104 students would have been part of the celebrations before a thanksgiving service was held with family members.
