Inquest ordered for man who plunged into Mahaicony River

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered that an inquest be held into the August 30 death of prisoner Godwin Maxwell, who had run out of the Mahaicony Police Station and plunged into the nearby river after being shot at.

Days after the man’s body was pulled out of the Mahaicony River a post-mortem determined that he had died by drowning.

A release from the police said following an investigation the police sent the file to the DPP for advice and it has since been advised that a corner’s inquest be held. The release said that the necessary documents are being processed to be forwarded to the coroner.

Maxwell, a promoter and an antenna maker, had made an appearance at the Mahaicony Magistrate’s Court on tax evasion charges. The 30-year-old of Calcutta, Mahaicony had made an attempt at escaping after he was placed on $45,000 bail. His family had said they were in the process of getting the bail money when the man rushed out of the station with the police behind him and jumped into the river.
