Several persons sustained injuries yesterday when a Toyota pick-up slammed into the back of a bus which was awaiting the green light at the junction of Sheriff Street and the Rupert Craig Highway.
The minibus, BLL 8282 was heading east along the Rupert Craig Highway for Mahaica around 1:30 pm yesterday when the pick-up, carrying an R Bassoo and Sons Construction Company logo, slammed into the back of the vehicle.
Nine persons were in the bus at the time and among those injured are, Amanda Perry, 31 of Hope, ECD; Drupattie Samura, 53, of Montrose and Simone Lyte also of the ECD. According to a release from the GPH, two 50- year old females, of Nabaclis and Montrose, ECD, sustained injuries to their ribs and legs. Another woman, Dookrani Mohan of Good Hope, Mahaica sustained a broken leg and according to her relatives, she was heading home at the time when the accident occurred.
Mohan was sitting in the third seat of the minibus, next to another woman who was reportedly trapped in the vehicle after the accident occurred. She was subsequently rescued by passers-by.
Samura related that she was sitting in the backseat of the minibus when there
was a sudden impact, after which she “pitched ‘til by the conductor seat”. She said she was the only person sitting at the back of the minibus at the time.
The woman sustained injuries to her abdomen and hands. Other passengers supported Samura’s claim, all noting that the mini-bus was parked at the traffic light waiting for it to change when the accident occurred.
According to the minibus driver Clement Thomas, he felt an impact, after which the minibus rolled more than 100m along the roadway. He said he heard several passengers in the bus crying out in pain. Public-spirited citizens rushed to assist.
When Stabroek News arrived at the scene several police officers were carrying out investigations.
