Rockstone residents get food prep training ahead of fish festival

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce hosted a series of tourism and hospitality training on Sunday at Rockstone, Region Ten ahead of the fifth Annual Rockstone Fish Festival.

In a press release the ministry said residents were trained at the Arawana Lodge in three main areas: culinary arts (food handling) by Carnegie School of Home Economics Lecturer Joy-Ann Harry; tour guide training, facilitated by Paul Waldron and Customer Service Training by Guyana Tourism Authority Deputy Director Tameca Sukhdeo-Singh.

The ministry and the GTA are partnering with the Rockstone Tourism Authority (RTA) to ensure this calendar event is held successfully. The groups have been collaborating with the Rockstone community since the Festival was first staged. They aim to promote the location as a tourist attraction and income-generating activity for the 250 residents. It was during one such meeting that the RTS identified the said areas for training for the community. Sukhdeo-Singh said the facilitators of the sessions were willing to participate. She observed too that the participants were “very interested and excited to learn new things, especially the young persons who took advantage of the tour guide training.”

Toshao of Rockstone Rance Allicock welcomed the training. He extended the community’s appreciation as preparations move apace for the Festival set for October 30 and 31.
