Guard shot at Princess Hotel

Minutes after a security guard tried to make peace among squabbling patrons at the Princess Hotel he was shot to the leg.

The guard was reportedly rushed to a private city hospital for treatment and has since been discharged from that institution. The patron who reportedly shot him was taken into police custody.

When Stabroek News visited the Providence, East Bank Demerara hotel yesterday afternoon management declined to comment. Other employees when approached admitted that there was a shooting but said that they’d been advised not to speak publicly about the matter.
Meanwhile, a senior police source confirmed last evening that the security guard had been shot.

Investigations, he said, were ongoing. The incident, according to him, occurred during the wee hours of yesterday morning.

The source, however, declined to divulge further information on the case stating that the Police Public Relations Department had already been informed and was responsible for disseminating the facts.

Up to press time police had not issued a statement on the incident. Several efforts made to contact Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker for a comment were futile.
