Power company offers amnesty for tampered meters

GPL customers with tampered meters have been granted a period of amnesty by the company whereby they can report the fault and receive a prepaid meter, CEO Bharrat Dindyal has said.

During a press briefing on Friday, Dindyal said that residential customers will be granted full amnesty while businesses offering services would have to pay back the power company the money it would have lost. However, prosecution would be waived for them. Dindyal stressed that recent legislative changes have made it easier for the power company to prosecute persons for such illegalities.

According to Dindyal, the period of amnesty would most likely continue until December 15 and during this period persons who have tampered with their meters or who have had others tamper with their meters could go into the company and declare what their status is. He stressed that the residential customers will be given a new prepaid meter by the company and will not be prosecuted.

After the amnesty is over an aggressive campaign will begin to deal with such illegal activities.
