Commander of ‘D’ Division Balram Persaud told Stabroek News that the argument was over $1,000. He said that around 8:30 pn on Sunday, the two were involved in an argument over $1,000 that Gregory had lent his younger brother. The younger brother then threw the money on the ground and this further angered Gregory and they become involved in a scuffle. Persaud said that the younger brother, a labourer, then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Gregory, killing him.

After the stabbing, Gregory was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, following which the police will determine how to proceed. Gregory and his brother had lived at the home, which was owned by their grandmother. It was his brother who assisted in taking him to the hospital.

Gregory’s girlfriend, Vanessa Green, who was present at the home when the incident occurred, said she was outside when she heard the argument. She said she did not see the stabbing since she was on the verandah and the incident was inside. “When that happen, I run away,” she said.

Relatives waited at the Leonora Police station to see the detained man and later emerged in tears. “From all I hear, they had a confrontation over some money,” and an argument erupted, the men’s father, Geoffrey Roberts said. “I can’t understand, the guys been living together and I never had no reason to hear any complaint about them,” he said. He said that from what, he was told, there is a likelihood of the younger brother being charged with manslaughter. The boys were his only two sons. However, their mother, who is overseas, has two other sons.
Gregory is the father of a daughter who is in Trinidad. Police are continuing their investigations.
